In October 2001 the International Maritime Organization approved a treaty with the global prohibition for the application of organotins acting as biocides in antifouling paints on January 1, 2003 and a complete ban on the presence of organotins acting as biocides in antifouling paints by January 1, 2008. Now that many countries are implementing the conditions of the treaty it is important to share information about commercially available TBT free antifouling paints. A copy of the treaty is included on the site for your information.

Classification Societies
When the IMO-AFS Convention enters into force, ships hulls must be surveyed and carry an international antifouling certificate proving their compliance with the Convention. These certificates will be issued by an official of a flag state - in practice this is likely to be carried out by a classification society. As an interim step, before the Convention enters into force, several classification societies are offering 'Statements of Compliance (SOCs)' which can be given to ships which have been surveyed and deemed compliant.

Classification Societies are in the process of seeking authorization to document vessels' antifouling systems as compliant to the IMO Antifouling Treaty on behalf of flag states.
